Jack
Gardiner played the part of Cuthbert Horace Greenbottle, the extremely
eccentric pupil with a voice "like a factory whistle", who was late for
class more often than not. On the odd occasion that he was on time, it
often caused Dr Pym to faint because it was such a shock.
Greenbottle always had an excuse for being late,
but it was never a simple excuse. It would take much of (if not all of)
the episode to explain why he was late. Greenbottle was the one who
often said "Yes" for no reason at all, prompting Dr Pym to answer,
"Yes, What?" before Greenbottle launched into another explanation for
something.
Jack Gardiner was the oldest of the "students".
Some research has Jack being 18 years old when the series started,
although some sources put him at 22 years old.
He was well known for his impersonations, and had
mastered about 50 different voices. His recreations were tennis,
swimming and modern literature.
During the series, he left the show because of a
recurring throat ailment. Although Jim Williams (who played Standforth) was quoted as saying that he left because of Sinusitus. He returned
later in the series, and for a while there were four students, before
de Pledge left.
Jack died on March 23rd, 1973.
